HÀ NỘI — Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm on Monday held talks with Mozambican President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi in Hà Nội, highlighting cooperation and exchanges as a key to strengthening bilateral relations.
Speaking with Parader Lâm on his first visit to Việt Nam as President of the Republic of Mozambique, President Nyusi sent his condolences on the passing of the late Party General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng and the devastating consequences of Typhoon Yagi on the Vietnamese people.
The Mozambican leader said that he was impressed by Việt Nam’s strong development and increasingly important role in the international community under the leadership of the Communist Party of Việt Nam (CPV).
Lâm congratulated Nyusi on Mozambique's achievements in political stability, solidarity, national unity and reconciliation, as well as the socio-economic growth that the country has witnessed under the leadership of its ruling FRELIMO Party.
The Vietnamese leader said he believed that this visit would create new momentum for the bilateral cooperation and traditional friendship that have been nurtured by generations of leaders and people from both countries.
The two heads of state also agreed to strengthen long-term relations between the two parties as a foundation for bilateral ties, especially through theoretical research activities, exchanges and training support for government officials.
Việt Nam and Mozambique will also increase delegation exchanges at all levels to enhance political trust and further promote bilateral cooperation.
They also plan to continue close coordination and mutual support at regional and international forums, including promoting collaboration in organisations of which they are respective members, such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
After their talks, both leaders witnessed a signing ceremony for memorandums of understanding (MOUs) on cooperation between Việt Nam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade and Mozambique’s Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, among other government departments, and between Việt Nam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Mozambique’s Ministry of Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries.
In recent years, relations between the two countries have seen significant progress, notably the success of Việt Nam's Movitel (Viettel) telecommunications joint venture in Mozambique.
This project has contributed to economic development and brought benefits to people in both countries, and can serve as a model for future collaborations.
Regarding trade, the two leaders agreed to facilitate the import of each country’s key products to the other, such as agriculture, textiles, seafood and coal.
They also plan to explore the possibility of expanding the joint venture cooperation model to other fields such as cashew processing lines or seafood processing plants in Mozambique.
Nyusi expressed his high regard for Việt Nam’s achievements in agriculture and hoped for further support in agricultural production and in replicating the success of trilateral agricultural projects between Việt Nam and other African countries.
To maximise their strengths and potential, both sides agreed to expand cooperation in education, training and exchanges in expertise.
Nyusi said he values Vietnamese healthcare experts not only in their professional capacity but also for their support in improving the skills of Mozambique’s onsite medical staff.
Việt Nam and Mozambique will also further promote the effectiveness of bilateral cooperation mechanisms such as the intergovernmental committee, political consultations, negotiations and signing of bilateral agreements in digital transformation, education and economy.
Regarding issues in the East Sea (internationally known as the South China Sea), the two leaders shared the same perspective on the importance of ensuring security, safety and freedom of navigation in and flights over the area.
They also emphasised resolving disputes through peaceful means and in accordance with international laws, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). - VNS
